Harley D. Caldwell, a beloved member of the Haywood County community, passed away on June 15, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on May 11, 1937, in Cataloochee Valley, he spent his entire life in the area, where he made lasting contributions and formed cherished connections. Harley is preceded in death by his parents, Jarvis and Bonnie Childers Caldwell, as well as his siblings Kendrick, Herschel, Johnny, Raymond, J.R., and Joe Caldwell.
Harley's career as a long-haul truck driver for Champion Paper spanned 19 years, during which he became known for his dedication and reliability. A proud veteran, he enlisted in the United States Army, demonstrating his commitment to service and his country.
As a member of Hazelwood Presbyterian Church, Harley exemplified the principles of faith and community. His involvement extended into the realm of youth sports; he was a respected baseball coach for Little League and Jr. Babe Ruth League, nurturing a love for the game in countless young players.
In addition to his professional and community endeavors, Harley was passionately engaged in local politics as a Yellow Dog Democrat. He served the Haywood County Democratic Party for many years and was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, showcasing his dedication to civic responsibility.
Harley is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Patricia June Winchester Caldwell, along with their children: daughter, Rita Breece (Charles) and sons, Alan Caldwell (Tammy) and Jeff Caldwell (Lisa). He is also survived by his sister Ann Ross, eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 20, 2025, at Green Hill Cemetery with Reverend Patrick Womack officiating. A visitation will be held at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville on Friday, June 20, 2025, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Hazelwood Presbyterian Church, 368 Hazelwood Ave, Waynesville, NC 28786.
As friends and family remember Harley, they will undoubtedly reflect on a life marked by service, dedication, and a deep sense of community. His unwavering spirit and the love he shared will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege to know him.
The care of Mr. Caldwell has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
