Gerald Swanger

Waynesville, Gerald A. Swanger, age 78, passed away on Sunday, March 20, 2016, at Harris Regional Hospital. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Alonzo and Ruth Cowan Swanger. He was also preceded in death by his niece Jeannie Brown and a nephew Brad Mills. Gerald played football at Waynesville Township High and served in the U.S. Navy. He retired from BASF with 38 years of service. Gerald was a plain and simple man. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Birdell Edwards; four step-sons, Larry Edwards, Juan Edwards (Deborah), Wayne Edwards (Debbie) and Don Edwards; two sisters, Mary Lou Hanke, of Canada and Audrey Trantham, of Waynesville; two nephews, Jim Griffin and Ricky Griffin; several great nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Cameron Brown. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Jim Griffin officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until service time.
