George Samuel Young, a beloved figure known for his loving spirit and dedication to others, passed away peacefully in Haywood County, NC in the quiet evening hours on Wednesday February 25, 2026, at the age of 93. Born on August 7, 1932, in Buncombe County, NC, George lived a life marked by service, hard work, and an unyielding commitment to his family and community.
George proudly and honorably served in the United States Army during the Korean War, where he faced adversity with courage and resilience, sustaining injuries that would not diminish his character or strong will. After his military service, he enjoyed a long and successful career, first as a machine operator with International Paper for over 30 years and later as a maintenance supervisor with Haywood County for 12 years before entering retirement.
As a man who genuinely cared for those around him, George was a mentor to his grandchildren, always ready to lend a helping hand. His love for God was evident, as he devoted much of his life to mission trips across the globe, often traveling to Costa Rica and Honduras, where he touched countless lives. As a proud member of the Baptist Men's Group, he ventured around the country assisting those in need, embodying the very essence of a servant leader. Mr. Young was a dedicated member of Dellwood Baptist Church, and a lifelong member of The Gideons International.
George was not only hardworking in his career but also dedicated to creating beauty in unexpected places. He loved to tinker in his garage, working on lawn mowers and tractors. His hands skillfully nurtured vegetable gardens, and in quieter moments, he found peace by fishing. Through it all, his laughter and warmth enveloped his family and friends, bringing joy to those around him.
He leaves behind his devoted wife of 30 years, Wilma Sue Young, who shared in his joys and passions. He is also survived by children, Tonya Brooks (Grady) of Columbus, GA, Mack Young of Canton, and Terri Massey (Larry) of Little Rock, AR. His legacy continues with his enchanting grandchildren, Melissa Nelson (Laura), Jessica Nelson (Josiah), Rebecca Nelson Sleeman (Nick), Shana Brooks Grace (Bradley), Miranda Brooks Portino (John), Bryan Young, Andy Young, Gena Massey, Jessica Elmore, and Jeremy Elmore, along with numerous great-grandchildren whose lives he enriched with his love and wisdom.
George is preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Burgin Young and Sarah Jane Hall Young; his beloved daughters, Robin Nelson and Rebecca Ann Elmore; and siblings, Helen Garren, Mary Jane Barnes, Homer Dell Stamey, and Pauline King. He is also welcomed to Heaven by his daughter-in-law, Marcia Young, and brother-in-law, Jim Garren.
In remembrance of George’s remarkable life, a visitation will be held at Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville on Saturday, February 28, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 12:00 PM. Pastor Bobby Rogers of Dellwood Baptist Church will be officiating, with special music by Sean Porter. Interment will follow at Crawford Ray Memorial Gardens in Clyde.
George Samuel Young will be deeply missed but forever cherished in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know him. His legacy of love, service, and dedication will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
The care of Mr. Young has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
