"Loving Father, Grandfather & Friend" Waynesville – George Wilcox Michal, 89, passed away on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at his residence in the White Oak Community. A native of Haywood County, he was a son of the late John McDowell Michal, II. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Michal, who died in 2001; a son, James Daniel Michal; brother, John McDowell Michal, III; and two sisters, Mary Ellen Michal McHone and Charlotte Michal Shackleford. George proudly served in the United States Navy from 1945 until 1954 during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a wonderful daddy, papaw, friend, and storyteller who could make everyone laugh. George loved with all his heart. He had a kind soul and could brighten the darkest of days. George retired from Champion International. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and was a member of White Oak Baptist Church. George will always be so much more than a memory. He is survived by three daughters, Emily Gentry and husband, Richard, of Denver, North Carolina, Mary Ellen Michal, and Martha Denney and husband, Joseph, all of Waynesville; one son, George "Buddy" Michal, Jr. of Waynesville; one sister, Sarah "Biddy" Michal of Bethel; special friend, Barbara Clontz of Canton; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Deacon Kelly Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Michal Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
