George Brening

Canton, George Frederick Brening, 92, passed away on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home.

A native of Springfield, Ohio, he was the son of the late George Edward and Kathryn Melissa Loos Brening. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis Brening, who died in 2010; and a brother, Jay Brening. George graduated from George Williams College, Dennison University and UNC - Chapel Hill. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy serving on USS Brush-DD745 and was a member US Navy V-12 Program at UNC-Chapel Hill. George was the Executive Director of the Rockford Illinois YMCA and was President of the Rockford Rotary. He was previously employed by Grand Rapids, Michigan YMCA, Port Huron, Michigan YMCA, Marion, Indiana YMCA and Rockford, Illinois, YMCA as Executive Director in those respective communities. George was a member of George Williams College Board of Directors; Trustee for North Suburban Library. He enjoyed traveling, bike riding and sailing.

George is survived by his daughter, Jill Key, and her husband, Dick, of Blue Ridge, Georgia; two sons, David Brening and his wife, Lisa, of Waynesville and James Brening and his wife, Evanna, of Fort Mill, South Carolina; sister-in-law, Verna Brening, of Springfield, Ohio; and six grandchildren.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to your local YMCA.
