"Loving Husband, Father and Friend" Clyde – Gary Lee Smith, age 67, passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at his residence. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Robert and Gladys Scott Smith. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his daughter, Brandy Smith, who passed away in 1978. He served in the United States Airforce National Guard for seven years and retired with 20 years service with Thompson Industrial Services in Sumter, SC. He enjoyed reading, cooking and gardening, and was also an avid fly fisherman and outdoorsman. Gary's love for automobiles led him to enjoy following NASCAR as well as owning and racing his own drag racing cars. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, of 19 years, Sharon Geeslin Smith of Clyde; one son, Jess Robert Smith of Union, Missouri; a stepson, James Thomas Berger of Romeoville, Illinois; a sister, Karen Smith Kreitzburg of Waynesville; and three step-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 24, 2017 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Danny Little officiating. Burial will follow at Crabtree Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 120 Executive Park, Building One, Asheville, NC 28801.
