Gary Matthews

Candler – Gary Neil Matthews, 57, passed away Thursday, May 18, 2017 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home. Gary was born in Haywood County but was a lifelong resident of Buncombe County. He was a son of the late Herbert and Clara Edna Ingle Matthews. Gary will be remembered as a true mountain man. He lived a simple life and enjoyed the beauty and nature of his native mountains. Gary had a special connection to animals and helped restore several different endangered species of lizards and squirrels back their native home of Western North Carolina. He was an extremely loyal man and was the "rock" of his family. His family was truly the apple of his eye. Gary is survived by his caring daughter, Carla Matthews and son-in-law, Adam Rhodes of Canton; son, Phillip Matthews; two sisters, Robin and Shavonda Matthews; one brother, Michael Matthews all of Candler; two beloved grandchildren, Lily and Carter Rhodes and ten special nieces and nephews. A visitation to remember Gary's life will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at Wells Funeral Home of Canton.
