Gary Knapp

Gary E. Knapp, 80, passed away December 8, 2022, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.  A native of Norfolk, VA, he was the son of the late Ruby and Adolph Knapp. Because he loved the mountains, Gary had lived in Waynesville for the past 10 years.

Gary held a BA in piano performance from Old Dominion University and a MA in theology from Loyola University. He was retired from Norfolk Public Schools. Gary also served as a musician at several churches, including 25 years as music director at Church of the Resurrection in Portsmouth VA.  In addition, he was on the board of the Well Retreat Center where he taught at the Virginia Institute for Spiritual Direction.  Gary also did private individual spiritual direction. He was currently a member of Urban Dharma in Asheville.

Gary is survived by his wife Sharon, son David, and sister Teresa Baker.  His musicianship, scholarship, unfailing kindness, support, and keen insights will be greatly missed by his friends and family.

The care of Mr. Knapp has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
