Garvin O’Dell Lawing, Jr., age 80, of Asheville, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2026, at Mission Hospital in Asheville, with his family by his side, offering him love and support every step of the way.
A native of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, Garvin was born on May 13, 1945, to the late Garvin O’Dell Lawing, Sr. and Bertha Carswell Lawing. He was also preceded in death by his son, Jeff Lawing in 2016; his sisters, Edith Wykle, Lois, Gladys, Eulander, Mable and Joan; brothers, Julius, Earl, and Glenn.
Garvin was a machinist in the industrial field and was known as a hardworking man throughout his life. He enjoyed music, playing the guitar, and especially loved Southern Gospel music. He and his wife, Sandra, enjoyed attending Gospel concerts together. He also played guitar in church and found joy in sharing music with others. Above all, Garvin loved his family dearly and treasured the time he spent with them. He will be remembered as a man full of character and humor, whose presence brought joy to those who knew him.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 20 years, Sandra White Lawing; his daughter, Jill Crowe; his son, John Lawing (Elisa); three grandchildren, Josh, Shaina, and Robbie; and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at the Chapel of Faith Mausoleum located at Forest Lawn Memorial Park at 1 Chapel of Faith, Candler, NC 28715. The family will receive friends one hour prior, from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Boys & Girls Club of Henderson County (PO Box 1460, Hendersonville, NC 28793) to support the incredible work they do for the children of Henderson County.
The loving family of Garvin O'Dell Lawing, Jr. has entrusted Wells Funeral Home of Candler with his care, and we are deeply honored to serve them during this time.
