Reverend Garrett Hobert "G. H." Shope, Jr., age 87, formerly of Fox Ridge Road, Horse Shoe, NC died Wednesday, June 6, 2007, at Pisgah Manor Nursing Home. He was a native of Haywood County and the son of the late Garrett Hobert and Bertha Miller Shope. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margie Stiles Shope, who died in 2001; his second wife, Virginia Kent Shope, who died in 2006; two sisters, Mabel Hooker and Hazel Young; and a brother, Clarence Shope. Reverend Shope was pastor of East Waynesville Baptist Church, East Fork Baptist Church, and Fairview Baptist Church in the Haywood Association; Bent Creek Baptist Church and Victory Baptist Church in the Buncombe Association; Enon Baptist Church in the Transylvania Association; Hartland Baptist Church and Piney Grove Baptist Church in the Caldwell Association. He also served a number of churches as interim pastor, Franklin Grove in Bryson City, Fairview and Sunny Point in the Haywood Association; and Ridgeway, Sun Rise, and Zion Hill Baptist Churches in the Buncombe Association. He was a United States Army veteran serving during World War II in the European Theater. He is survived by two daughters, Sharon Poss and her husband, George, and Vickie Rogers all of Asheville; a son, Gary Shope and his wife, Jo Ann of Penrose; two sisters, Sue Belcher of Candler and Ruth Shope of Westland, MI; four brothers, Calvin Shope and his wife, Genevieve, Robert M. Shope and his wife, Doris, James Shope and his wife, Gail, and David Shope and his wife, Necie, all of Candler; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three step-children. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 10, 2007, at Ridgeway Baptist Church with the Reverend Jack W. Collins officiating. Burial will follow at Ridgeway Baptist Church Cemetery. Military graveside honors will be conducted by the United States Army. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. Saturday at Wells Funeral Home of Canton where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. At other times, the family will be at the residence of his daughter, Sharon Poss, 194 Pisgah View Road, Asheville.
