Elsa Spillman Higgins, age 80, died Friday, August 29, 2008 at Memorial Mission Hospital. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, she was a daughter of the late Alfred and Hedwig Kuschel Spillman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Sidney Higgins, who died in 2006; a sister, Erica Tetus, and a brother, John Spillman. Harold and Elsa lived in East Barnard, VT for over 30 years. Both were members of the Grange there and moved to Clyde about 15 years ago. Elsa was a member of Clyde Central United Methodist Church where she was a member of the United Methodist Women Circle #3. She was a life member of the ladies auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and she also assisted her husband in the Clyde Lion's Club for many years. Elsa enjoyed cooking and reading. She is survived by a daughter, Linda Benoit and her husband, Lawrence, of Brockton, MA; four sisters, Caroline Baribault, Margaret Vecchitto, Kay Ehrhart, and Rose Barton; two grandchildren, Teresa Twomey and Marc Ostrosky; and two great-grandchildren, Gary Chubbuck, Jr. and James Ostrosky. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at Clyde Central United Methodist Church with Reverend Randy Tingle and Reverend James Hart officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Clyde Central United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 8, Clyde, NC 28721. Wells Funeral Home of Canton is in charge of the arrangements.
