Ella Mae Tate Balentine, better known as "Chick", died November 14, 2018. She was born December 29, 1921 in Marion, NC to Joshua Curtis and Mary Lee Hollifield Tate; after her mothers’ death she gained a devoted stepmother, Cora Jane Dellinger. She was the loving wife of Charles Workman Balentine for 70 years.
Ella Mae attended Asheville Teachers College for a short period and was involved as a member in the Mountain View Garden Club. As a member of First United Methodist Church of Waynesville she taught Sunday School in the Primary Department and attended the Asbury Sunday School Class.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, Sr.; her oldest son, Charles, Jr.; her sister, Louise Furr; her brother, Plato Curtis Tate; and her special friend, Nan Tinsley Alexander Liner.
She is survived by two sons, Michael Tate Balentine, of Dillsboro and John Curtis Balentine and his wife, Susan, of Waynesville; her daughter, Beverly Balentine Brown, of Balsam; and her special friend, Patricia Blackwell Balentine Kennedy, of Winston-Salem. Ella Mae was also blessed with eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 17, 2018 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Dr. Mary C. Brown officiating. The burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be M. Curtis Balentine, David C. Brown, John B. Balentine, Joshua C. Balentine, Alan R. Brown, and Charles A. Balentine.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First UMC, P.O. Box 838, Waynesville, NC 28786.
