"Gone But Not Forgotten"
Waynesville, Edith Rogers Davis, age 92, passed away on Friday, June 15, 2018.
Edith, a native of Haywood County, was the daughter of the late Hugh and Ullah Green Rogers. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Davis; son-in-law, Ernie Reynolds; two sisters, Lois Kuykendall and Mary Virginia Green; and brother, Bennett Rogers. Edith worked in the Haywood County School System in Food Service where she worked the majority of her career as manager of Waynesville Middle School (which was earlier known as Waynesville Township High School). She and staff served a 1,000 plus students daily with good home cooked lunches. Edith was a member of the Hazelwood Baptist Church where she served for many years on the kitchen committee. She served refreshments to children in Vacation Bible School and worked as the coordinator of her group to serve food to families in mourning the death of a loved one. Edith was known for her potato soup and macaroni & cheese dishes that she would take to those who were ill. She stated that she was not someone who could teach but she could serve with something that she knew about, cooking. Edith volunteered at Haywood Christian Ministry where she worked at least one day per week in the household department. She also volunteered at Open Door Ministry where she worked by helping prepare hot meals for the needy who came to eat as well as the Red Cross where she served blood donors refreshments.
Edith is survived by three daughters, Arlene Reynolds, Joyce Hennessy (Chip) and Beverly Davis (Allen); four sisters, Pauline Haney, Evelyn Plemmons (A.J.), Daisy Northrup (Ira) and Beverly Arrington; one granddaughter, Leanne Lynch (Kevin); two great-grandchildren, Madeline and Davis Lynch; and many nieces and nephews. Very special friends and caregivers, Vicky Gunter and the Warren Putnam Family, as well as the Reynolds extended family who welcomed her into their lives as Grandma.
Our mother's attitude was that how you live your life is your funeral that you preach. Also, she stated that you should care about a person while they are alive to enjoy a visit and to hear the sound of your voice, not to come to a funeral to show that you cared. Thus, we are honoring her wishes that no services will be held.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Haywood County School Foundation, Lunch Assistance Program, 1230 N. Main Street, Waynesville, NC 28786 or Hazelwood Baptist Church, 265 Hazelwood Avenue, Waynesville, NC 28786. Also, to perform a random act of kindness and tell someone that you, love them while they are alive.
