Dr. Craig Alan Iverson

Dr. Craig Alan Iversen, 78, of Waynesville, NC, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2025. Born on February 14, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois, he is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Barbara; his daughters Jennifer Greene (Josh) and Erika Wellman (Shawn); and his granddaughter Peyton Greene. He is also survived by his sisters Ellie Lindal (Mike) and Karen Sticha (Dave); his brother Paul Iversen (Reneta); as well as many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bruce Iversen and Gertrude Lischett Smith.

Craig earned his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, cum laude, from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1968. He went on to complete both his Master’s (1971) and Doctorate (1974) in Child Clinical Psychology from Emory University. His professional life was devoted to advancing mental health care, particularly in rural communities.

He served on the North Carolina Board of Examiners of Practicing Psychologists, including roles as chair (1988–1991) and vice-chair (1991–1993). He was also active in the National Association for Rural Mental Health from 1985 to 1992, serving as secretary and chair. In addition, Craig volunteered his expertise as a staff psychologist for Hospice and REACH of Haywood County and served on the Board of Commissioners for Haywood Vocational Opportunities from 1983 to 1988.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Craig was a man of many passions. He loved trout fishing in the mountains of Western North Carolina, was an avid woodworker who found joy in crafting and gifting handmade pieces to family and friends, and was a lifelong lover of music, especially the Grateful Dead. An enthusiastic reader, he delighted in sharing book recommendations with anyone who asked.

Craig’s wisdom, humor, and generous spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 30 at 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Waynesville. The family will receive friends following the service. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Waynesville, PO Box 838, Waynesville, NC 28786.
