Doug
McKinnish
Jun 23, 1955 — Sep 8, 2026
Canton, NC
Neil Douglas McKinnish, age 71, passed away watching the night sky fade into early morning on September 8, 2026. Doug was a gifted woodsman and hunter, a generous father, and a resourceful problem-solver. His knowledge of the forests, streams, and lakes of western North Carolina was a product of decades spent in waders and tree stands. Throughout his 40 years of dedicated service at Champion (later Evergreen) paper mill, he would finish a seven-day work week and still find the energy to go fly fishing or turkey hunting. At home, he made dinners and built furniture, constructed an in-ground pool, and taught his children how to ride anything with wheels. In retirement, Doug connected even more deeply with both the land and his family. He cooked, gardened, hammered jewelry, dried, canned, tied flies, and rediscovered a love for live music and travel. Yet, despite the demands of his garden and a calendar full of events to which he could drive the old Corvette, Doug was the very essence of easy-going. He enjoyed the life he had made and was unbothered by the “small things.” He was a thoughtful and generous man who worked hard for what he had and never hesitated to share it with others. In his unshakeable calm and unassuming generosity, he leaves his most meaningful legacy.
He is survived by his children, Dr. Tyler McKinnish (Clayton) and Bridgette Brooks (Lucas); grandchildren, Landon and Blaire Brooks; siblings, Kathy Sherrill (Dan) and Tim McKinnish (Caroline); and his best friend, partner, and companion, Susan McCall. He is preceded in death by parents Neil and Hiawatha McKinnish, as well as older brother Charles McKinnish. He will be sincerely and sorely missed.
Friends and family are welcome at a celebration of Doug’s life from 1-3 pm on Saturday, September 19, 2026 at his home in Canton. If you feel so inspired, please direct gifts to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.
