Dorothy Fields

November 8, 1917 — March 19, 2007

Maggie Valley-Dot was born at Crestmont, NC to James I. and Florence Green, the youngest of six children. She spent much of her youth in small mill towns before her family settled in Waynesville. During WWII, Dot went to work in Wilmington, NC where she met the love of her life, James W. Fields. They were married September 6, 1942 and lived happily in Georgia, Indiana and many years in Chicago. When Jimmie retired, they joined her sister, Ila, in Maggie Valley and became very active in church and community events. Dot was a woman of many talents. She could dance the Charleston, sing in the church choir and deal a mean hand of black jack, at the Golden Gathering. She was a serious card player! And pretty good at it too. She loved crafts of any kind and was good at that also. Dot loved children. She and Jimmie were second parents and chief spoilers to all of the Fields' children, as well as, to the little ones of friends they met at each move. Recently Jessie, Chandler, Austin, Green-Lee and Mary Elizabeth, the Martin grandchildren, have been her favorite source of fun. The day before she became ill, Dot was busy preparing Easter treats for the young ones at Maggie United Methodist Church, as she has done for many years. For the last several years, Dot (and Ila) lived with and were cherished as much loved family members, by Peggy Martin and Betty Ruth Smith and their families. She was ‘Granny Dot' to them. Peggy stayed day and night with Dot at the hospital this last week. They have been a wonderful blessing to Dot and Ila and our whole family. While Dot is happy to be in the house of the Lord with Jimmie again, those of us left behind will truly miss her. Included are: Emma O'Malley (sister), Colleen O'Malley Simms (niece), Peggy O'Malley (niece-in-law), several great, great-great, and great-great-great nieces and nephews and many loving friends all over the country. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, March 31, 2007 at Maggie United Methodist Church, 4192 Soco Road, Maggie Valley, NC 28751. Please join us in a celebration of Dot's life. Memorials may be made in Dot's name to the Maggie United Methodist Church.
