Canton-Dee Gudger Sharpe, age 90, of Sayles Road, died Monday, December 30, 2002 at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

A native of Graham County, he had lived most of his life in Haywood County. He was the son of the late J. Mark and Dora Phillips Sharpe. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Maude Cooke Sharpe in 1984. He was a US Army veteran of World War II and was employed by Dayco for 21 years. He was also a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church where he served many years as an usher.

He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Blanche Burnette Sharpe; a stepdaughter, Brenda Cathy of Canton; a sister, Norma Sharpe of Robbinsville; two brothers, Louis Sharpe and Dewey Sharpe of Robbinsville; three grandchildren, Laura Cathey Hart, and her husband, Walter, of Charlotte, Robin Cathey Bennett and her husband, Mark of Loganville, Georgia, and John Cathey, and his fiancé, Svenja Kock of Asheville; a great-grandson, Andrew Bennett of Loganville, Georgia; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 2, 2002 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend James Burress and Reverend Howard Pless officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12:45 - 1:45 p.m. on Thursday prior to the service.
