David J. Cheek

Clyde

David J. Cheek, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, was called Home to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 8, 2025, at the age of 62.

Born in Swain County, North Carolina, in 1963, David resided in Haywood County, NC, for most of his life. He dedicated his life to his career, family, and faith, leaving behind a legacy of love and devotion.

David’s professional journey spanned nearly four decades, primarily with Evergreen in Canton, NC, where he was known for his hard work, commitment, and blue shirts. Recently, he took on a new role as Manufacturing Manager with Graphic Packaging, demonstrating his commitment to continual growth and learning in his field. His academic background at North Carolina State University, where he majored in paper science and chemical engineering, laid a solid foundation for his successful career.

A builder at heart and an accomplished woodworker, David brought his creative talents not just to his profession but also to crafting lasting memories with his loved ones. As a man of great wisdom and wit, he enjoyed sharing his knowledge and teaching those around him the skills he cherished. He found joy in every moment spent with his grandchildren, Millie and Ellis, and took pride in his role as “Papaw David,” nurturing their growth and development with love and patience.

David's personality was as vibrant as his interests; he was an avid football fan, and he had a keen eye for the stock market. He was never a stranger to anyone, effortlessly engaging with those around him and making connections wherever he went. Further, those who knew him will remember how freely he gave, and how little he ever asked for. Most importantly, David was a man of faith, committed to sharing the love and word of Jesus Christ with others, inspiring many to find hope and solace in their own lives.

David absolutely adored his wife of 39 years, Sandy Cheek—the love of his life and his greatest joy. Their bond was a testament to commitment, love, and shared moments of happiness. David's family also includes his daughter, Ashley Smart, and her husband, Wes, along with grandchildren Millie and Ellis; his son, Adam Cheek, and his partner, Chase Martin; his father, Bobby Cheek; his sister, Cindy Brown, and her husband, Eric; his father-in-law, James Brown, and his brother-in-law, Terry James. He was a cherished uncle to nephews McKinley and Trail Brown, niece Tasha Hincy and her husband, Jared, and nephew Tyler James.

He was welcomed into Heaven by his mother, Carolyn Cheek; his mother-in-law, Mildred Brown; his sister-in-law, Lisa James; and many other beloved family members. His absence leaves a deep void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

As we remember David, we celebrate a life marked by kindness, love, and unwavering faith. He will be greatly missed, yet his legacy will live on through his family and friends who were fortunate enough to know him.
