Waynesville-Daniel Thomas Metzger, 78, of Waynesville, died Sunday, May 11, 2003.
A native of Chicago, IL, he joined the US Navy in 1943 and trained as a pilot. He served as squadron commander aboard the aircraft carrier USS Tarawa and was stationed throughout the world. He retired in 1963 as a commander after 20 years of service. Following retirement from the military, he worked as a CLU in Miami for Mutual of New York. He became a 32nd degree Shriner. In the mid 1970, he and his wife moved to Waynesville. He was active in the Kiwanis and served a term as president. He also worked with the Red Cross Blood Bank.
His wife of 56 years, Nelda Jeanne Metzger; one son, Stephen P. Metzger and wife, Jane, of Waynesville; two sisters, Dorothy Larson and Edith Marinangel of Chicago; and one grandson, survive him.
In honoring Mr. Metztger's request his ashes will be scattered over the mountains. A private memorial service for the family will be held at Jonas Ridge at a later date.
