Canton - Clyde Lee Miller, 89, of the Dutch Cove community, passed away on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at the Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals.
A lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Bill and Letha Reece Miller. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, German (Nazi) Miller and a sister, Jacqueline Gibson. Clyde was a member of Dutch Cove Baptist Church and retired from Champion International with 38 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Thomasine Watts Miller; three daughters, Diane Cordell, Wanda Teague and husband, Russell, and Melissa Lee Hyatt and husband, Keith, all of Canton; one son, Danny Miller and wife, Kim, of Canton; one sister, Hazel Frederick and husband, C.E. of Canton; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
Clyde was an outstanding left fielder and star hitter in fast pitch for the Champions of Canton. He made the All-State team seven times, All-Southern All-American in 1949 when he was the leading hitter in the national tournament. Clyde played on seven state championship teams. Clyde was honored as a 1989 inductee into the North Carolina Softball Hall of Fame in Burlington.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Jason Miller officiating. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
