Claude William Smith, 89, born on February 13, 1936, in Clay County, North Carolina, peacefully passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on January 6, 2026.
Claude’s career as a truck driver spanned many years, and he even owned his own truck at one point. Driving across the United States was not merely a job for Claude; it was his passion.
Claude also served in the Army for a few years, where he contributed by unloading ships and was stationed in Greenland. His military service exemplified his dedication and commitment to serving his country.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Claude was a devoted family man who cherished every moment spent with his loved ones. He enjoyed deep sea fishing and looked forward to family reunions, which brought him joy and strengthened the bonds among those he held dear.
Claude is survived by his beloved wife, Minnie Shelton Smith, with whom he shared 44 wonderful years of marriage. He is also survived by his son, Terry Smith, and daughter, Deborah Slusher (Andy). His legacy continues with his grandchildren, Chris Smith, Scott Smith, Sabrina Ledbetter, and Daniel Whittaker. Additionally, he is survived by his sisters, Beatrice Frady and Peggy Stiles (Robert).
Claude is preceded in death by his parents, Oliver William Smith and Evia Lee Pressley Smith, along with his brothers J.D. Smith, J.B. Smith, and J.C. Smith, his sisters, Corabelle Smith and Ann Conner, as well as his sons, Ricky Smith and Randy Smith. Claude will forever be remembered for the love he gave and the memories he created with those he cherished, including his brother-in-law, David Frady.
Visitation will be held at Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville, NC, on January 12, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. A funeral service will follow immediately at 1:00 PM, concluding with a burial at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park at 2:15 PM.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
