Asheville, Charles "Son" Clemmons, 89, passed away peacefully Thursday, November 7, 2019 at Pisgah Manor Health Center.
Charles, affectionately known as Son, was a native of Buncombe County, and the son of the late Bill and Ella Cowart Clemmons. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Clemmons, with whom he spent 40 loving years; three brothers, Larry, Jack and Harry; and two sisters, Barbara Stills and Darlene Morris.
Son was employed as a mechanic with Buncombe County Schools for 10 years. Prior to his time with Buncombe County Schools he served his community as a Buncombe County Auxiliary Deputy for 8 years, as well as serving 10 years with the Anderson Brown Patrol. Son played a significant role in the creation of Asheville’s first film festival, and he can be seen as a stand in making appearances in the movies: Journey of August King; Thunder Road ’58; and My Fellow Americans. His love of western films also carried over to a love of western clothing. Son also loved attending horse shows, and going out to dinner and the movies. But above all else, he will be remembered for being an amazing father and grandfather.
Left to cherish Son’s memory are three daughters, Martha "Rose" O’Kelley, and her husband, Donald of Candler, Luwana Hensley of Candler, and Robin Russell of Swannanoa; a son, Sammy Clemmons, and his wife, Kathy of Candler; a brother Douglas " Mac" Clemmons, and his wife, Barbara Grant of Asheville; a sister, Judy Barnes, and her husband, Ronnie of Asheville; twelve grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; and two great-greatgrandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, November 11, 2019 at 12:00 p.m. at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverends Larry Marshall, Johnnie Sams and Clarence Ingle officiating. Burial will follow at Sky View Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday November 10, 2019 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home. Serving as pallbearers will be Adam Clemmons, Josh O’Kelley, Stephen O’Kelley, Christian Hensley, Bryson Penland, and John Penland.
