Charles Woodruff

Canton - Charles Glenn Woodruff, age 85, went to be with the Lord Saturday, March 31, 2007 at Smoky Mountain Healthcare Center. He was a native of Swain County but had lived most of his life in Haywood County and was a son of the late Glen DeForest and Belva Hall Woodruff. He was preceded in death by his wife, Willella Barton Woodruff; one sister, Major Faye Woodruff and one brother, William Ray Woodruff. He retired from Champion International with 40 years of service. Charles served in the United States Navy as an electrician's mate on the Essex Aircraft Carrier where he fought in 15 battles with 12 of them being major battles. He was a member of West Canton Baptist Church, a member of Canton's Pigeon River Masonic Lodge 386 A.F. & A.M. and also a Shriner. Charles loved bowling, camping, fishing, listening to southern gospel and bluegrass music, and telling a good story. He is survived by one daughter, Donna Woodruff and her significant other, Brad Corpening, of Canton; one son, Lynn Woodruff of Griffin, GA; two sisters, Altha Mae Buchanan of Canton and VeEtta Webb and her husband, Leon, of Waynesville; one brother, Ted L. Woodruff and his wife, Bonnie, of Canton and one grandchild, Andrea Woodruff and her significant other, Keith Dudley, of Charlotte. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2007 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend W.O. "Bill" Henson and Reverend George Holley officiating. Burial will follow in Pisgah View Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home. The Pigeon River Masonic Lodge will open at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday.
