Waynesville-Charles Ray "Red" Smathers, age 77, of 48 McElroy Street, passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2006 at his residence. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Clayton and Nola Wooten Smathers. He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Patricia Gosnell; one son, Eddie Smathers; and two brothers, Doc and Herald Smathers. He was employed by Haywood Appliance and retired in 1995. He was a member of the local National Guard. Red's one passion was fishing throughout the mountains of NC. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lula Mae Cagle; two daughters, Kathy Mack and her husband, Randy, of Sylva and Linda Mack of Canton; two sisters, Bobbie Banks and her husband, Junior, of Waynesville and Jane Payne and her husband, Tom, of Weaver, AL; three brothers, Carroll Smathers and his wife, Bernice, of Waynesville and Jack Smathers and his wife, Rita, all of Waynesville and Bill Smathers and his wife, Nancy, of Canton; four grandchildren, Christopher, Lacey, and Tyler Mack, and Joseph Gosnell; and one great grandchild, McKenzie Mack. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2006 at Morning Star Cemetery with Reverend G.W. Jameson officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00 to 12:25 p.m. on Saturday at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville. Memorials may be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.
