Charles Shelton, 79, born on July 28, 1946, in Asheville, North Carolina, to the late Eli Marion and Anna Mae Smith Shelton, departed this world on January 28, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He embodied the spirit of a true public servant, having dedicated significant portions of his life to both his country and community.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife of 33 years and mother of his children, Maxine Shelton, as well as his siblings, Johnny Allen, Glenn Shelton, Irene Wheller, Louise Gray, Larry Shelton, and Alvin Shelton.

After enlisting in the United States Army in 1966, Charles served three years then twenty years in the Army Reserve, retiring as a Sergeant First Class in 1995. His commitment to service and country earned him respect and admiration, primarily due to the American heart and soul he displayed to all those around him. Charles was not just a soldier; he was a leader and a protector, showcasing his deep care for others through his military and law enforcement endeavors.

Following his military service, he translated his skills into a short career as a Deputy Sheriff for Buncombe County. Throughout his tenure, Charles became known for his unwavering dedication to the community. His partners and those he served alongside admired his leadership and ability to touch lives. He genuinely cared for everyone, striving to be there for his neighbors and anyone in need of a helping hand.

An avid outdoorsman, Charles found joy in fishing and hunting, often sharing these passions with those he loved. More than anything, he cherished spoiling his grandbabies, filling their lives with love, laughter, and precious memories. The bond he had with his family was a testament to his character, a beloved husband, a devoted father, and a doting grandfather.
