Canton – Carroll Vaughn “Butch” Owen, age 78, passed away on Tuesday, August 17, 2021, at his residence.
A native and lifelong residence of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Arnold Vaughn and Faye Mull Owen. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Ronnie Owen, and a great-grandson, Carson Lacy.
Butch was a 1961 graduate of Bethel High School and an employee of Dayco Corporation and served as a union representative for Local 277. Butch enjoyed participating in the United Way Day of Caring. He also volunteered with the Community Kitchen of Canton. Butch was a member of Canton Central United Methodist Church, a member of Koinonia Sunday school class and held various other positions within the church. Butch enjoyed fishing and hunting, living at Lake Keowee, and exploring the world on many cruises. Butch also coached little league baseball and football at Clyde and the Canton YMCA for 15 years. He was a veteran of the North Carolina National Guard and an active member of the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Patricia Murphy Owen; two daughters, Carolyn Russell (James) of Sevierville, Tennessee, Christie Paxton (Randy) of Canton; two sons, Terry Owen (Donna) of San Antonio, Texas, and Todd Harkins (Julie) of Conover; eight grandchildren, Katie Paxton, Taylor Lacy, Dustin Russell, Bailey Owen, Barrett Harkins, Logan Harkins, Destiny Russell and Braden Owen; and three great-grandchildren, Mason Lacy, Milah Russell and Bryson Lacy.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 21, 2021 at Canton Central United Methodist Church with Reverend Erin Yow officiating. The family will receive friends in the sanctuary following the service. Military honors will be conducted by the North Carolina National Guard.
The wearing of masks and social distancing will be observed.
