Crabtree Community, Carroll Eugene Hill, age 84, passed away on Thursday, July 21, 2022, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.
A lifelong resident of Haywood County and a resident of Maggie Valley Nursing & Rehabilitation for the past four years. Gene was a son of the late Sam and Quaye Elizabeth Justice Hill. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Rose Hill, who died in 2016; and a brother-in-law, Yoder Messer. Gene proudly served in the United States Army and worked in the shipping department at Dayco for 32 years. He was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. Gene loved the outdoors, enjoyed gardening and canning and was an avid coon hunter. He was known for his infectious smile.
Gene is survived by two daughters, Eugenia Moore, of Crabtree and Jennifer Frizzell (J.D.), of Sylva; son, Ricky Hill (Sherry), of Hyder Mountain; two sisters, Freda Hill and Novella Rogers (David), both of Crabtree and one sister-in-law, Stella Nell Messer, of Cleveland, Tennessee; three nieces, Kristy Rogers, of Crabtree, Judy Slagle (Dave), of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Trudy Lilly (Al), of Fletcher; two nephews, David Harold Rogers, of Crabtree and Davisro Messer (Lorraine), of Cleveland, Tennessee; several great and great-great nieces and nephews; three grandchildren, Ernie Hill, Mary Hill Sheehan (Isaac) and Samuel Moore; and a great-granddaughter, Maggie Sheehan.
A special thanks to the caregivers at Maggie Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation and Haywood Regional Medical Center for the care given to our father.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2022, in the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Billy Ferguson and Reverend Jeffrey Moore officiating. Burial will follow at Upper Crabtree Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service. Serving as pallbearers will be Ernie Hill, Samuel Moore, Isaac Sheehan, Davisro Messer, Adrian Presnell and Gary Howell.
