Carolyn Shelton Grooms entered Heaven’s gates on Saturday, May 17, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Virginia Elizabeth “Beth” Shelton; her brother, James F. King; her sister, Paulette Shelton; her brother-in-law, Donald Bennett, her beloved nephew, Tony Scarboro and her dear friend, Alice Monteith.
Carolyn leaves behind a devoted family and a community of cherished friends. She is survived by her beloved husband, James “Paul” Grooms, and her girls— daughter, Amy Russell and her wife, Lisa Monteith—who were the light of her life.
She shared a deep bond with her sister, Louise Bennett, and held a special place in her heart for her granddaughter, Jordan Arvey, and Jordan’s husband, Brent. She was affectionately known as “Aunt Huff” to her precious niece, Devon Scarboro, and her daughter Layla Singleton.
Carolyn’s world revolved around her great-grandchildren: Brody Arvey (11), Alice Nichols (9), and Boone Nichols (8). She was joyfully anticipating the arrival of her fourth great-grandchild, due in December 2025.
Carolyn’s legacy of love, faith, and family lives on in all who had the joy of knowing her. Affectionately known as the “community lunch lady,” she spent over 25 years at Hazelwood Elementary, nourishing and nurturing thousands of children. Her passion for cooking was matched only by her love of gathering people around her dining room table. Carolyn never met a stranger—her kindness, warmth, and infectious spirit made everyone feel like family.
Carolyn truly loved life. She embraced adventure, especially when it involved traveling and discovering new foods. A savvy shopper, she had a remarkable talent for finding the best clearance treasures. She was known for her signature Yellow Box flip-flops and cozy house coats, both of which brought her joy. Carolyn cherished simple pleasures—prime rib lunch dates with her beloved husband and afternoons at the movies. One of her greatest joys was picking up her great-grandbabies from school. She proudly claimed her spot at the front of the car line, ready with snacks, hugs, and a big wave for her little ones.
Carolyn’s family will receive friends Wednesday, May 21st, from 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM, followed by a celebration of life at 6:00 PM at Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville, NC. The service will be live streamed for our family and friends who are unable to attend in person.
The care of Mrs. Grooms has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
