Obituary

Carl Webb Burke, 90, passed away on Sunday, June 21, 2026, at Pisgah Manor in Candler, NC. Born in Miami, Florida, during a hurricane on September 27, 1935, Carl's birth could not be officially registered until September 29 due to the storm's impact. He was the beloved son of Ralph and Ruth (Thompson) Burke.

Carl attended college for a short time before answering the call to serve his country. He proudly served in the United States Navy for eight years, including during the Korean War. Following his military service, he built a life centered on hard work, family, and community, owning and operating a restaurant where he welcomed many through the years.

Above all else, Carl cherished his family. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who found great joy in spending time with those he loved. He shared 60 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life, Bonnie May Rawls Burke. Together they built a strong and loving family and were blessed with two children, Laura and Kenneth.

Carl will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his service to his country, his strong work ethic, and the kindness he showed to others. His legacy lives on in the lives of his loved ones and in the many memories they will forever treasure.

Left to mourn Carl’s passing are his children, Dr. Laura (Ron) Leatherwood; Kenneth (Hope) Burke; grandchildren, Brittany (Devin) Knotts, Logan (Mary Jane) Braswell; great-grandchildren, Jayana, Delta, and Arya Braswell; and a niece, Janene (Dan) Cutler. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie May Burke, and a brother, Gene Burke.

A visitation will be held in honor of Carl’s life on Thursday, June 25, 2026, from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.

Mr. Burke’s care has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
