Bruce Edward Hannah

Bruce Edward Hannah, 83 of Waynesville, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents, Medford and Bonnie Sutton Hannah Frady, and his brothers Joe Hannah, Odel, Dennis, and Lowell Messer. Bruce also is preceded in death by his son-in-law, Thomas Smathers.

After more than 42 years of devoted service at Champion Paper’s Waynesville Plant, Bruce retired in 2001, having built a respected career that earned him admiration from colleagues and friends alike. His unwavering work ethic was matched only by his commitment to his family and community.

Bruce was a devoted member of the Waynesville Christian Fellowship Church, where he found connection and purpose among fellow worshippers. His faith guided him through life's challenges and nourished the bonds he formed with others.

Outside of work and church, Bruce had a profound love for the outdoors. He enjoyed working on his farm, participating in the tranquil activities of fishing and hunting, and spending rejuvenating moments by the lake. However, nothing brought him as much joy as watching his grandsons engage in sports, where he could be seen cheering them on enthusiastically from the sidelines.

Bruce is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Peggy Garrett Hannah, and his three daughters, Lisa Smathers, Teresa Prusia, and Sherry Shannon (Mark). He also leaves behind his cherished grandsons: Justin Smathers (Caitlin), Daniel Smathers (Katie), and Miles Prusia, along with his great-grandsons, Dakota and Jackson Smathers.

The family invites all who knew Bruce to honor his memory during the visitation, which will take place on November 2, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Waynesville Christian Fellowship Church, located at 1115 Dellwood Rd, Waynesville, NC 28786. A funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m. with Alan Caldwell officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park.

As we celebrate the life of Bruce Edward Hannah, we remember a man whose heart was as vast as his many interests and whose love for his family and friends was immeasurable. He will be profoundly missed but lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Gideon International, PO Box 634, Waynesville, NC 28786 or St. Judes Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
