Waynesville - Bobby Douglas "Bud" Phillips, 78, went to be with his Lord and Savior, surrounded by his loving family, on Sunday, March 4, 2018 at his home.
A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Roy A. and Hazel Warren Phillips of Bethel. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Doris and Linda; and a brother, Bill Phillips.
Bud was a United States Army veteran. He was formerly employed with Olin Corporation in Brevard for 28 years, then went on to retire from Haywood Community College as an instructor for over 20 years. Bud enjoyed spending time on Lake Chatuge with his family and friends. Bud was an avid antique car collector and tractor restorer. He was an original member of the Mountaineer Antique Car Club in 1966 and a member of the Smoky Mountain Tractor Club. Bud had endless patience and a natural gift to teach about his passion and has many students who have successfully achieved their own business in the market place. Bud quoted most recently that his greatest achievement was his family and the love that was shared between them and what a legacy that he will leave in his life.
He is survived by his constant companion and wife of 57 years, Maxine "Mickie" Rathbone Phillips; two sons, Joe Phillips and wife, Bequetta and Barry Phillips and wife, Mary, all of Canton; one daughter, Judy Matthews and husband, David, of Waynesville; two granddaughters, Caroline Hyatt and husband, Daniel of Canton, and Mandalin Patten and husband, Hunter of Charlotte; one grandson, Adam Phillips of Canton; a beautiful great-granddaughter, Harper Lane Phillips of Canton; one brother, Stanley Ray Phillips (Lisa) of Alabama; and a sister, Kay Cody (Neal) of Georgia
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Matt Pruett officiating and Reverend Nathan Ashe
officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home in Waynesville and at other times at the home, 1129 Edwards Cove Road.
The family wishes to thank Bud's doctors who provided excellent care: Dr. T. Ward, Dr. B. Paschal, Dr. R. Lang as well as Haywood Regional ICU and step-down, Haywood 21st Oncology and Haywood Hospice Care, especially Carol , Bonnie, and Patricia B.
