Bill Queen

November 16, 1948 — December 11, 2016

Waynesville, James William "Bill" Queen, age 68, passed away on Sunday, December 11, 2016 at his residence. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late John M. Queen, Jr. and Margaret Hundley Queen. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son, Joseph Queen. Bill cherished the days he spent on the farm. Some of his fondest memories were herding cattle in the spring and fall, taking the four mile trek from John Queen Farms to Lake Junaluska. In 1972 along with family, Bill became the owner/operator of the Short Stop for ten years, where he enjoyed conversing with the patrons of Haywood County. Upon meeting his wife Joyce, Bill transitioned to owner/operator of Rock Planter Garden & Florist. Throughout those years, Bill never missed a chance to golf at his favorite course, Maggie Valley Country Club. Upon retirement, he and Joyce loved traveling the United States and selling his hand-made leather crafts to the Shriner's Club, Family Motor Coach shows and various state fairs. Bill's favorite past time was spending time with his friends at Taylor Motor Company on a weekly basis. His loving demeanor endeared him to so many and Bill will be greatly missed. Bill is survived by his wife of 35 years, Joyce Caldwell Queen; one daughter, Jennifer Queen, of Summerville, SC; one son, James William Queen, Jr., and his wife, Francis, of Massachusetts; three stepdaughters, Sheila Allen, and her husband, Steve, of Clyde, Deborah Sherrill, of Waynesville and Valerie Sherrill, of Washington State; one stepson, Dan Sherrill, and his wife, Kathy, of Canton; four sisters, Alice Queen, Margaret Rathbone, and her husband, Paul, Susan Carver, and her husband, Sammy, all of Waynesville and Mary Wilson, and her husband, Bill, of Knoxville; one brother, John M. Queen III, and his wife, Pat, of Waynesville; three grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Maple Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until service time at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Haywood County EMS, 215 N. Main Street, Waynesville, NC 28786.
