Canton – Betty Jo Justice Allen, 90, passed away on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at Skyland Terrace and Rehabilitation Center.
Betty was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and a daughter of the late John Albert Justice and Effie Haney Justice Holder. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh T. Allen and son, David Hugh Allen. Betty was a member of Maple Grove Baptist Church where she was a former pianist and organist. She along with her sisters were well known for singing in Haywood County as the Justice Sisters. Their ministry in music blessed many families throughout the area in nursing homes, prison ministries, and churches. Throughout her stay in nursing homes, she became a very beloved individual and was affectionately referred to as “Mamaw”.
She is survived by a son, Jimmy Allen (Donna) of Clyde; two sisters, Mary McElrath and Sara “Pug” Fox, both of Canton; three granddaughters, Renee Rowland (Jonathan) of Clyde, Charity Anderson (Donald) of Tennessee, and Amber Smith of Arkansas; and five great-grandchildren; Joseph, Anthony, Krisita, Peyton, and Caden.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, January 23, 2023 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Donnie Henson and Reverend Tommy Carlisle officiating. Burial will follow at Plains United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Activities Fund of Skyland Terrace and Rehab, 516 Wall Street, Waynesville, NC 28786.
