Berta Carpenter

Canton - Berta Hendrix Carpenter, age 94, of Ferguson Street, died Wednesday, October 10, 2007 at The Oaks at Sweeten Creek. She was a native of Buncombe County, but had resided in Haywood County for most of her life and was a daughter of the late, Walter and Cora Lee Ingle Hendrix. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred William Carpenter, who died in 1970; two granddaughters, Melody Carpenter and Debbie Carpenter Steelman; five brothers, and five sisters. Berta was a lifetime member of Calvary Baptist Church where she was a member of the choir and a gifted musician. She also enjoyed sewing, crocheting and doing many other crafts. She is survived by one daughter, Barbara Fish and her husband, George, Sr., of Canton; three sons, Ed Carpenter and his wife, Shirley, of Duncan, SC, Charlie Carpenter and his wife, Midge, of Dunn, NC, and Wiley Carpenter and his wife, Mary, of Candler; nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren, and a special niece, Margaret Smith Buchanan of Clyde. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, October 13, 2007 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Dennis Ruff officiating. Burial will follow in Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2:30 until 4:00 p.m. prior to the service. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
