Bennie Sutton

Canton - Bennie Jo Smathers Sutton, 83, passed away on Monday, July 2, 2018 at The Homestead.

A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was a daughter of the late Herbert Deaver and Agnes Lindsey Smathers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Jerry and Ansel Smathers. Bennie Jo retired from Haywood County Schools with 25 years of service where she worked as assistant librarian at North Canton School. She also taught pre-school at Central United Methodist Church. Bennie Jo loved sewing, tending her rose garden, spending time with family and friends and was a member of Canton First Baptist Church and the Goodson Sunday school class.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Billy C. Sutton; one daughter, Pattie Fish (George) of Canton; two sons, Michael C. Sutton (Sandra) of Prattville, Alabama and Charles Sutton (Insun) of Canton; one brother, Larry Smathers of Canton; seven grandchildren, Mandy Roberts (John), Aaron Fish, Lindsay, Elizabeth, Nicholas, Jae, and Shawn Sutton; and three great-grandchildren, Cole and Allie Roberts and Nolan Fish.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 7, 2018 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Court Greene and Reverend Justin Lowe officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
