Barbara Messer

Canton – Barbara Burress Messer – 75, passed away on Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

Barbara was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and a daughter of the late Bob and Edna Rogers Burress.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant brother, Lemuel Burress.  She worked in the office of Haywood County School System at Bethel Middle School for 25 years.  Barbara loved her family, her church family, and spending as much time with their grandchildren as possible.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Alvin Messer; two sons, Anthony Messer (Amber) of Cruso and Dewayne Messer (Suzanne) of Canton; one sister, Linda Gant (Charles) of Penrose; her brother, Reverend James R. Burress (Andrea) of Mills River; and four grandchildren, Dustin Messer (Jenna), Sydney Messer, Addison Messer, and Arley Messer.

A funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 6, 2022 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the Reverend Eddie Deitz, Reverend James R. Burress, and Reverend Bennie Robinson officiating.  Burial will follow at New Cruso Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 261 Dix Creek Road, Canton, NC  28716.
