B.G. Robert R. Jeter, Jr. NC Defense Militia (Retired) died peacefully at his home in Charlotte, NC on March 16th 2026. He was 92.
Born on January 25, 1934 in Norfolk, Virginia, General Jeter graduated with a BA in Chemistry from the University of Richmond in 1959. For the next 30 years, he had parallel industrial and military careers. As a civilian, he held Sales and Management positions in the textile, dye, and chemical industries, retiring as National Sales Manager for HicksonChemical Co. In the military, first in the US Army and then the US Army Reserves, he held command positions at the Company, Battalion and Brigade levels. During this time, he graduated from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, the Command and General Staff School, and the Army War College. He retired as Chief of Staff of the 108th Division with the rank of Colonel in 1985. Afterward, NC Governor Jim Martin called him out of retirement, promoted him to Brigadier General in the NC Defense Militia, and placed him in charge of western NC. He was inducted into the Officer Candidate School (OCS) Hall of Fame at Ft. Benning, GA in 1991.
He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed being outdoors, whether it was hunting, boating, or attending college football games. He had a keen interest in history, nature and conservation. Everyone knew that he was a person who could be relied upon. He was a member of Forest Hill Church in Charlotte, NC, the Army War College Alumni Association, the OCS Alumni Association, and the OCS Hall of Fame. He was also a licensed Real Estate Broker in NC.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert R. Jeter, DVM and Blanche R. Jeter of Waynesville, NC, his older brother James P. Jeter of Asheville, NC, and his younger brother David R. Jeter of Garner, NC. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Julia Ann Stovall Jeter of Charlotte, NC, two sons and their spouses, Doug (Celeste) Jeter of New Albany, OH, and Andrew (Stacy) Jeter of Salisbury, NC, three grandsons and one granddaughter.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2026 at 12:00 pm at Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home. Visitation will be held one hour prior. Burial will take place following at Greenhill Cemetery with military honors.

The care of Mr. Jeter has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
