Audrey Ann Swanger Trantham

April 10, 1940 — May 11, 2023

Waynesville

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Audrey Trantham, who peacefully entered her eternal home on May 11th, 2023, at the age of 83. Audrey is survived by her sister, MaryLou Swanger, and her sons, Jim Griffin (Laura) and Ricky Griffin (Barb). Her memory will be cherished by her grandchildren: Cameron Brown, Tenisea Higgins (Roger), Aaron Griffin (Kelly), Jason Griffin (Sonya), Joey Robinson (Sarah), DeAna Stine, Scott Sims, Amber Trantham (Ryan), Rachael Litaker (Denver), Hannah Brandt, Michael Brandt, as well as her 16 great-grandchildren.

Audrey was born on April 10, 1940, to Ruth and Alonzo Swanger and was a lifelong resident of Haywood County. She will be reunited in heaven with her loving husband of over 35 years; Owen Trantham, her daughter; Jeanne Brown, son-in-law; Ronnie Brown, son; Danny Trantham, mother; Ruth Swanger, father; Alonzo Swanger, and brother; Gerald Swanger.

Audrey will be remembered for her love and dedication to serving others, which she demonstrated daily in her work with children and individuals with disabilities. She was a devoted employee of Head Start and The Arc of Haywood County, where she made it her life's mission to assist others. Audrey formed close bonds with her coworkers, Polly Hightower and Pat Hill, and they frequently enjoyed shopping, traveling, or sharing lunch together.

Audrey and Owen found great pleasure in farming and took great pride in cultivating and growing vegetables from their farm. Even after they no longer had a farm of their own, Audrey continued to can and preserve green beans every summer, an activity she greatly enjoyed.

Audrey will be deeply missed by the many people whose lives she touched during her time on earth, but her family can take solace in the knowledge that she is now reunited with her beloved husband and daughter, whom she loved and missed dearly.

A private memorial will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that friends and family consider donating to one of the non-profits listed that Audrey supported.

Donations can be sent to The Arc of Haywood County at 407 Welch Street, Waynesville, NC 28786 or Haywood County Autism Society of NC Support Group at 5121 Kingdom Way #100, Raleigh, NC 27607.
