Sylva, NC, Archie Leon Mixon, 74, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, October 24, 2022, at Skyland Care Center.
A native of Kentwood, Louisiana, he was a son of the late Gurley Hamilton and Gertrude Brown Mixon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Elaine Bennett; and two brothers, Gurley H. Mixon, Jr. and Robert A Mixon.
Archie received his master’s degree from LSU and had the privilege of serving for 47 years as a clinical/psychiatric social worker in Louisiana, North Carolina, and with Pee Kis Kwe Tan ("Let’s Talk") Society in Wabasca, Alberta, Canada. During his career and retirement, he always cared for and counseled others, especially young people. His favorite form of therapy was to take them fishing, a situation which benefited everyone involved.
Archie was an ardent supporter of the LSU Tigers and rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on his team. He loved his family, loved to fish, hunt, camp and be in the woods or on the water. He was an avid rockhound. You could not spend time with Archie without learning something. History, Geology, Geography, and Meteorology were favorite subjects. Archie had a beautiful singing voice and enjoyed many kinds of music including Cajun zydeco, New Orleans jazz, blues, classic country, hymns, and bluegrass. Good music, good food, good jokes, and bad puns – those were his favorites.
Archie is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Brenda Davis Mixon; daughter, Stefanie Kompathoum (Phetsmone); son, Gabriel Mixon (Alison Carter); sister, Martha Alexander; brother, William Mixon; and two grandchildren, Oliver and Grace.
