Waynesville, Alex George Metzger, age 75, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 12, 2017 at The Homestead. A native of Cook County, Illinois, he was the son of the late LeVern and Edith Langbeen Metzger. Alex proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corp. and retired from the United States Postal Service with 30 years of service. Alex was a member of St. Margaret's Catholic Church. He was the Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus Council and a 4th degree Knight. The past three years he thoroughly enjoyed volunteering his time with all of the Knight's various charity works, as well as donating time to the Haywood Christian Ministry. Alex was a NASCAR fan and an all around car enthusiast. He especially loved his 2007 Corvette. Alex was an avid outdoorsman and hunter. Most importantly, he was a cherished father, husband, grandfather and friend. Alex is survived by his wife of 47 years, Betty Metzger; son, Dean Metzger, and his wife, Dawn, of Zeeland, Michigan; sister, Catherine Makela, of Tallahassee, Florida; two grandchildren, Geoffrey and Kayla Denuyl; several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at St. Margaret of Scotland Catholic Church. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Knights of Columbus Council 12478, L.A.M.B Fund, P.O. Box 7, Maggie Valley, NC 28751-0007.
