Canton – Iris Mildred Nix Whitted, 93, passed away on Monday, November 18, 2019 at Maggie Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Mildred was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and a daughter of the late William Fountain Nix, Sr. and Zadie McJunkin Nix. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dock Ted Whitted, Jr. who passed away in 2011; a brother, W.F. “Bill” Nix, Jr.; four sisters, Vera Brown, Sarah Hipps, Auline Wiggins and Rena Whitted; a sister-in-law, Maryjo Elmore; and two great-grandchildren, Caleb, and Samuel Pierce. Mildred worked as a teacher’s aid for the Haywood County School System for a number of years and was a lifelong member of Canton First Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sons, Steven Michael (Mike) Whitted and fiancé, Anita Kaplan, of Wilton, Connecticut; Paul Douglas Whitted and wife, Vera, of Maggie Valley; a sister-in-law, Pat Nix; six grandchildren, Chris Whitted (Heather Estes), Ashleigh Pierce (Brit), Wes Whitted (Sue Hillard), Shannon Burch (Patrick), Pamela Williams (Brad) and Luke Penny; seven great-grandchildren, Braden and Ansley Pierce, Cole Williams, Eli Penny, Braden Williams, Emerson and Parker Burch; and a niece, Martha Elmore.
A memorial service will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at Canton First Baptist Church with the Reverend Court Greene officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Canton First Baptist Church, 74 Academy Street, Canton, NC 28716.
