Waynesville, Magdalene "Mag" Lenoir Dunton, age 85, passed away on Monday, September 30, 2019 at her residence.
A native of Haywood County, she has resided in Stone Mountain, Georgia for the last 14 years. Mag was a daughter of the late Jacob and Mae Florence Gibbs Lenoir. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her daughter, Beryl Marie Lenoir Cherry; a sister, Ruth Lenoir; and two brothers, Jacob and Ed Lenoir. Mag worked with the Waynesville Police Department and the Haywood County Sheriff’s Department. She started as a school crossing guard and worked her way up to police officer and then to a deputy where she retired with 23 years of service. Mag was a member of Jones Temple AME Zion and Antioch AME in Stone Mountain. She enjoyed decorating and spending time with her family.
Mag is survived by a daughter, Benita Lenoir Jones (Henry); son, Bart Lenoir (Angelina); Jeffery Andre Cherry, Donna and Joyce Lenoir, who Mag raised as her own; two sisters, Dorothy Mae Gibson and Mamie Woodard; a brother, Reverend Howard Lenoir; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
A Homegoing service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at Jones Temple AME Zion Church with Reverend Myrna Casey, Reverend Walter Bryson, Reverend William E. Stanley and Reverend Howard Lenoir officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:30 until 1:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Grandchildren and nephews will serve as pallbearers.
The care of Ms. Dunton has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Homes
