David Paul Harkins, age 87, passed away on Tuesday, May 08, 2012 at his residence.
A native of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Lloyd Lewis and Blanche Green Harkins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Wiley, Dewey, Robert, and Carl Harkins; and one sister, Helen Miller. Paul was a United States Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Riverside Baptist Church. Paul retired from Champion International with 41 years of service as head fireman in the steam plant. He was a charter member of the Lake Logan/Cecil Fire Department and an avid outdoor sportsman.
Paul is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rubye H. Harkins; one daughter, Hilda Grace Harkins Keener and her husband, Larry, of Canton; one sister, Margaret Burrus of Canton; one brother, William R. Harkins and his wife, Thomasine, of Canton; two grandchildren, Myra Watson and her husband, Craig, of Waynesville, and Sarah Keener of Raleigh; and one great-granddaughter, Molly Corinne Watson; sisters-in-law, Joyce and Ruth Harkins of Canton, and Adele Harkins of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; and several Albrecht cousins from Michigan, Ohio, and Florida.
Funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 10, 2012 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Steve Frazier, Reverend Larry Sprinkle, and Reverend Thomas Kemp officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Gary Harkins, Terry and Adam Huskey, Craig Watson, and his two hunting buddies, Donald and Donnie Mathis.
