Wayne Stamey

George Wayne Stamey, age 90, passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at John. F. Keever Solace Center in Asheville. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late George E. and Flora M. Stamey. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Howard M. Stamey and a grandson-in-law, Robert N. Holcombe. He retired from Champion International after 40 years of service, was a lifelong member of the Long's United Methodist Church and a member of Sonoma Masonic Lodge #472 AF&AM. He was an outdoorsman and loved working on the farm. He loved horses and enjoyed gardening. Wayne was a United States Navy veteran serving in WWII. He is survived by a loving wife of 65 years, Jane Gregory Stamey; two daughters, Judy Jones of Canton, and Jan Wiggins and her husband Robert of Gastonia, NC; a special nephew, Jimmy Gregory and his wife Joyce of Alva, FL; a sister, Edith Edwards of Waynesville; a brother, Neal Stamey of Canton; two grandchildren, Lora Jones Holcombe, and Katie Wiggins Thomas and her husband Robert; three great-grandchildren, Annie Len Holcombe, Robert William "Liam" Thomas III, and Kiptyn Elizabeth Thomas; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Rennie Salata and Mr. Andrew Brooks officiating. Burial will follow at Long's Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
