Vanita Messer

Waynesville-Vanita Cagle Messer, age 94, of 41 Beantown Road, died on Thursday, October 19, 2006 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native and life long resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Jess and Artie Moody Cagle and was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Messer, who died in 1998; a son, Oliver Messer; three sisters, Beulah Cagle Messer, Greta Sutton, and Leona Carver; one brother, Groce Cagle; two grandsons, Michael Messer and Martin Brown; one granddaughter, Dale Brown; and one great granddaughter, Candace Star Davis. She was a member of Hemphill Baptist Church. She dearly loved her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed working with her flowers, cooking, and canning. She is survived by two daughters, Eleanor Messer, and Lois Morrow and husband, Tommy, both Waynesville; two sons, Reverend Howard L. Messer and wife, Anita, of Elizabethton, TN and Claude Messer and wife, Judy, of Waynesville; one sister Edna Newkirk, of Lancaster, OH; five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 22, 2006 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Ernest Messer and Reverend Jeremy Troxler officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday evening at the funeral home and at other times at their own homes. Serving as pallbearers will be Kevin Morrow, Darien and Cody Caldwell, Stephen Messer, Benny Swinford, Todd Trantham, Brian Cairnes, and Howard Sorrells. Honorary pallbearers will be B.J. Morrow, Linda Fulbright, Melissa Queen, Rita Laws, and Robin Bradley. Memorials may be made to Jonathan Creek First Responders, 149 Corner Drive, Waynesville, NC 28785.
