Sue Parks

Maggie Valley, Susie "Sue" Leatherwood Parks, age 91, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at her residence after a period of declining health. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Jacob Verlin and Lottie Messer Leatherwood. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by ten brothers and sisters; seven half brothers and sisters; and two sons, Joseph Verlin "J.V." and Larry Ray Parks. Mamaw, as Sue Parks was called by her grandchildren and many friends was a loving mother and grandmother. She worked to provide and be a caregiver for her family. She was a helpful neighbor who enjoyed quilting, gardening, preserving food, and was an excellent cook who enjoyed preparing meals for all her family and friends. She was always thinking of others, was very kind-hearted, and always looked at life with a positive attitude. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. In her later years, Mrs. Parks worshipped at Lizzie's Chapel in Maggie Valley. She is survived by two sons, Gene Parks and his wife, Anita, and Reverend Jerry Parks and his wife, Marie, all of the Iron Duff Community; two daughters, Janice Marie Ratcliffe and her husband, George, of Boynton Beach, Florida and Mary Sue Parks Edwards and her husband, Kyle, of Maggie Valley with whom she made her home for 47 years; very special family member, Cheryl Gunter; 11 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; 7 great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She leaves behind her special dog, Loco, age 11. The family will have a memorial celebration at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 21, 2010 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Steve Taylor, Reverend Jerry Parks, and Reverend Gary Scott officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Interment will be at Dellwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Antioch Baptist Church, 542 Iron Duff Road, Waynesville, NC 28785.
