Roy Hyde

April 17, 1923 — February 15, 2010

Roy Hyde, age 86, of the Dutch Cove community of Canton, NC, passed away on February 15, 2010 at Canton Christian Convalescent Center after a period of declining health. Roy was born in Swain County on April 17, 1923 but lived most of his life in Haywood County. He was the son of William Robert and Martha Carson Hyde. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Henry Hyde, and a very dear granddaughter, Leah Camille Setzer. Roy was a veteran of World War II and was always proud that he had the opportunity to serve his country in the 3rd Marine Division. He participated in operations against enemy forces at Guam, the Marianas, and Iwo Jima. Roy was a member of Dutch Cove Baptist Church having served as a former deacon, trustee, and chairman of the building committee. He was also a master carpenter and helped build many houses in Canton and surrounding areas. He retired from Champion Papers in 1986 with 27 years of service. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jacqueline Gaddy Hyde; two daughters, Rebecca Setzer and her husband, Chuck; and Deanna Willett and her husband, David, both of Canton; three grandchildren, 1st Lt Nathan Setzer of Sumter, SC; Patrick Willett of Charlotte, NC; and Farrah Willett of Boone, NC; one sister, Nellie Paxton of Canton and one brother, Carl Hyde, of Tallassee, Alabama. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 18, 2010, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Ed Lowder officiating. Entombment will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service. Roy was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff and nurses at Canton Christian Convalescent Center for the wonderful, loving care he received during his stay there.
