Robert Luckey

September 9, 1938 — September 19, 2014

Bob Luckey, 76, a retired Newsday photo journalist and Photo Editor, formerly of Stony Brook, N.Y. passed away at his home in Clyde, North Carolina on September 19, 2014. Bob began his career at the Long Island Press in the late 50's and then spent 30 years as a Staff photographer for Newsday, and the last decade of his career as a daily assignment Photo Editor. Camera in hand, he captured many significanthistorical events: JFK's presidential campaign and funeral, The Beatles arrival at Shea Stadium and the Civil Rights Movement. However, he found his greatest joy in the daily assignments covering life on Long Island, especially the East End. Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1938, the son of Harold and Helen Luckey, his family moved to Long Island in the early 1950's. It was here that Bob had the unique opportunity, through his photography, to document the culture and history of a place he loved deeply. Along with his wife Lorraine, of 54 years, they raised six children in Stony Brook, NY. He retired to the Mountains of Western North Carolina, a community whose surrounding beauty and people continued to inspire him. He is survived by his wife Lorraine (Piculell) Luckey of Clyde, NC.; his children; Brigid (Micheal) Luckey-Smith, Robert (Vivian) Luckey, Brian (Sara) Luckey, Elizabeth (John) Ferro, Jennifer (Rich) Meyer and Margaret (Peter) Luckey-Helenius.; his eleven grandchildren; Kyle, Kaitlyn, Keegan, Connor, Sean, Sydney, Christopher, Amelia, Cecelia, Emmie and Kai; his sister, Helen Rafferty of Stony Brook, NY. He was preceded in death by his brother, Phillip Luckey, and his parents, Helen and Harold Luckey. A funeral service will be be held on Tuesday September 23, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Mount Zion Methodist Church in the Upper Crabtree Community of Clyde, N.C. Burial will follow at the Upper Crabtree Community Cemetery.
