"Puffy" Smith

July 9, 1951 — June 15, 2015

"1951 – 2015" Asheville – Carroll "Puffy" Smith passed away on Monday, June 15, 2015 after an odds defying battle against pancreatic cancer, at St. Joseph Campus of Mission Hospitals. A native of Haywood County, he was born on July 9, 1951 to the late Woodrow Wilson and Isabel Revis Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Roger and Samuel Smith. Puffy had a long life of many adventures and jobs. He drove buses and long-distance cargo trucks, owned and operated a hot dog restaurant, was a licensed auctioneer, a butcher, and tow-truck operator, among the many other ways he made contributions to our community. Puffy's "second mother" was Nina Fisher, who, along with close friends and other family members were with him during the last days of his life. His standard poodle, Oscar, is as sad as the rest of us, but will have a new and loving home. Puffy will be missed and so will his annual birthday party which was attended by a diverse and mixed crowd of people who represent the philosophy and open-mindedness he was always known for and by which he lived his life. Puff accepted people for whom and what they are no matter race, age, sex, orientation, identity, or ability. He is survived by a brother, Virgil Smith and his wife, Joyce Ann, of Candler. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, June 18, 2015 at Center Pigeon Baptist Church Cemetery with the Reverend James Hutchinson officiating. In lieu of flowers, Puffy wanted donations to be made to the American Red Cross, 100 Edgewood Road, Asheville, NC 28804 or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
