Oscar Laney

James Oscar Laney, age 89, died on Sunday, October 16, 2011, at Aston Park Health Care Center. He was the son of the late John M. and Eliza Vick Laney. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Emma Henson Laney, who died in 2010 and a son, James E. Laney. He retired from American Enka with 40 years of service and was a member of Ridgeway Baptist Church. Oscar was in the Civilian Conservation Corps Camp and enjoyed camping and raising a garden. The family would like to thank the staff of Aston Park for their wonderful caring help while Oscar was there. He is survived by two sons, Gary B. Laney and his wife, Chris and John W. Laney and his wife, Debbie, all of Candler; a daughter, Donna Pearson and her husband, Tim, of Connelly Springs, NC; a daughter-in-law, Judy Laney of Candler; two sisters, Della Mehaffey of Glouster, VA and Nellie Trull of Candler; six grandchildren, Jason, Stacy, Bryan, Mark, and Patrick Laney, and Melanie Pearson; and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 19, 2011, at Ridgeway Baptist Church with the Reverend Jack W. Collins officiating. Burial will follow at Ridgeway Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3:00 until 4:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Aston Park Health Care Center, 380 Brevard Road, Asheville, NC 28806 or to Ridgeway Baptist Church, 525 Old US 19/23 Hwy., Candler, NC 28715.
